An album is more than its front cover

The cover introduces a release, but the rest of the package carries the experience. A listener might read the lyrics, look through a booklet, study the credits or keep a record sleeve on display. Album layout is the work of bringing those elements together so they feel intentional, readable and connected to the music.

Designing for CD and vinyl

CD packaging and LP sleeves have different dimensions, proportions and ways of opening. A design needs to be composed for the format rather than simply enlarged or reduced. I work across covers, disc labels, supporting panels and layouts, building a consistent visual language while giving each physical format the attention it needs. Neuropa is one example where the work spans both CD and LP.

Typography deserves as much care as the image

Track lists, lyrics, acknowledgements and credits are part of the release. Their hierarchy should help a reader move through the material without competing with the artwork. The right scale, spacing and contrast make dense information easier to use. Names and credits also need careful checking: a beautifully composed page still needs to contain the correct information.

One identity across promotional materials

The same visual direction can extend into posters, flyers, catalogues and merchandise. These pieces need their own compositions and priorities. A poster must communicate at a glance, while a booklet or catalogue can reveal more detail. Consistency comes from shared typography, colour and visual decisions, with a layout suited to each purpose.

Preparing the artwork for production

Print preparation starts with the actual supplier’s template and specification. Trim size, bleed, safe areas, colour requirements, image resolution and export settings need to match the intended product. A folded sleeve or multi-page booklet also needs the correct panel or page arrangement. These details should be settled before the final export, with text and artwork checked together.

A connected project from start to finish

My work brings together visual identity, album artwork, layouts and supporting print. That makes it possible to develop the release as one project, from the cover through to the materials used to promote it. If you are planning an album, bring the format, available artwork, text and production requirements into the conversation early. They shape a better result.
